BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE CENTER

The Center's mission: ”… to advance the biopsychosocial understanding and treatment of functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders through an integrated approach to patient care, research, training and education” was implemented through four areas of activity: 1) Patient Care – to offer state of the art evaluation and treatment for the full range of functional GI and motility disorders, 2) Research – to conduct studies on the physiological and psychosocial mechanisms underlying functional GI and motility disorders, their impact on quality of life and health outcomes, and their treatment, 3) Training – to provide multidisciplinary training and education in clinical and research skills with an emphasis on patient centered care and advanced research methods, and 4) Patient Education – to provide helpful and up to date information through seminars and workshops as well as printed materials, videos and the internet.

Today, the Center is one of the leading programs in research, clinical care and education relating to the functional GI and Motility disorders. In 2008 the Co-Directors jointly published 37 articles in peer reviewed journals; 14 books/book chapters and 42 abstracts. Academic Gastroenterologist: Junior to mid-level person to work in our Center for Functional Gastrointestinal and Motility Disorders, as part of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Description: The UNC Center for Functional Gastrointestinal and Motility Disorders is one of the leading programs in research, clinical care and education relating to the functional GI and motility disorders. Gastroenterology McNeil Fellowship for Research and Clinical Training in Functional GI and Motility Disorders

Purpose: We are seeking promising young physicians for academic careers in Functional GI and Motility Disorders. Our long-term goal is to develop a cadre of clinician/researchers who will fill leadership positions to help advance this field.
Training Environment: The UNC Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders is the premiere center for research and patient care for these disorders. The Center’s co-directors, Dr. Douglas Drossman and Dr. William Whitehead, are recognized for their leadership of the Rome Foundation, the AGA, the Functional Brain Gut Research Group, the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders. Their research accomplishments have led to numerous NIH grants and publications in the area of outcomes research, co-morbidities, visceral hyper, and treatments for FGIMDs. Drs. Drossman and Whitehead will mentor the fellow’s research training. For details, see the Center website www.med.unc.edu/ibs. In addition, the fellow will have standard clinical training in gastroenterology and hepatology in one of the most highly ranked programs in the country (400 applicants for each training slot) Traditional fellowship training will be supplemented by mentored training in patient-focused assessment and treatment of patients with functional GI disorders by Dr. Drossman.
Eligibility: Applicants must be physicians who are US citizens or green card recipients, and must be eligible for GI fellowship training. The Applicant must be motivated for a career in academic medicine with a commitment to functional GI and motility disorders.

Biofeedback Therapist

The UNC GI Biofeedback Clinic provides pelvic floor muscle retraining for patients with fecal incontinence, constipation due to pelvic floor dyssynergia, and rectal pain patients. Our very busy practice receives referrals from the UNC departments of uro-gynecology, urology, surgery, as well as gastroenterology. In addition patients are referred to us for biofeedback from Duke and Wake Forrest Universities , as well as other, out of state medical centers. We're currently seeking a qualified candidate to join us in a challenging opportunity within our GI group located in Chapel Hill , NC .
This full-time position requires that the applicant be BCIA certified (or have nearly completed the certification process). Experience working with pelvic floor disorders and nursing experience are preferred. Training and supervision will be provided by Steve Heymen, PhD, as needed.

Research Assistant

We are looking for an experienced individual to coordinate an academically based clinical and research program.  The ideal candidate should have a bachelors or higher level degree. The person in this position is responsible for coordinating multiple clinical trials, which entails creating and maintaining charts, recruiting patients, conducting phone interviews, and administering patient clinic visits. During patient visits, review consent forms, take a medical history, explain the study process, and detail participation
This person is also responsible for organizing and maintaining a research publication database of over 10,000 files.
