Our staff member, Carolyn Clabo, Director of Development and Communications, has served on the UNC Health/UNC SOM Staff committee for the DEI Diversity Council with the Dean’s office since February 2021.

SOM Office of DEI

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides coordination, oversight, and leadership of the UNC SOM’s diversity and inclusion programs and leads the school’s efforts to maintain and continue to build a more diverse community and a more inclusive working and learning environment that values and respects the contributions of all members of the community.

D&I Council

The Diversity and Inclusion Council was established to act as an advisory board to the Vice Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The council acts as a body of experts charged with carrying out the mission and directives of the School of Medicine’s strategic plan for diversity and inclusion. D&I Council members are made up of 20 members charged with advising Dr. Nate Thomas, Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, on policy matters, collaborating with community partners as a resource and source of feedback, promoting the recruitment of underrepresented faculty, staff, trainee, and student members, and work with the Office of Inclusive Excellence to implement the DEI Strategic Plan. The staff subcommittee is made up of 14 members across SOM who serve under Dr. E. Nathan Thomas III, Vice Dean for DEI. The purpose of the Staff Subcommittee is to be the voice for staff across the School of Medicine to build a more diverse and inclusive work environment and contribute to achieving our DEI Strategic Plan.

Having staff representation on the SOM DEI Council and forming a staff subcommittee provides an incredible opportunity for the greater staff community across the School of Medicine.
