My name is Ava Gaudet and I am a rising junior at Carrboro High School. I am very involved in music and I play multiple instruments and I also do theatre at my school. When I found this program I was ecstatic because this was the exact type of internship that I had been looking for. There aren’t a lot of medical internships available for teenagers because it is hard to be able to shadow in clinical settings (especially since covid). This program was amazing for many different reasons but amongst them were being able to talk to doctors and nurses about how they got to where they are today and how we can take steps in that direction for our own careers, shadowing on ambulances and at mobile health labs around the community, meeting lots of new people and being able to work with the other interns and become great friends with them, and book club (which was one of my favorite parts of the whole program!)

I absolutely loved the book we read this year and I learned so much from it that I had absolutely no idea about before reading this book. It was also so great to meet with these people and discuss our thoughts about the book because it gave me a new perspective on what I was reading.

I would highly recommend applying for this program if you are interested in medicine or research as a career path. Even if you are only a little interested this might strengthen your love for medicine and you will have amazing experiences that you wouldn’t otherwise have. Julianne is the absolute best person to work with and helped us all with our research projects and helped us to learn more about medicine.
