I was initially excited about the ISHTaR program because it promised everything for which I was looking. I was a high school student interested in medicine, specifically emergency medicine, looking for some real-life experience. ISHTaR offered an opportunity to work with research teams, shadow numerous different fields in medicine, and take part in impactful work while getting paid. The internship lived up to all my expectations and more: I took part in preliminary research, helped do a literarature review for training EMS, transcribed interviews, got to interview local EMS representatives, shadowed a midwife at UNC, interviewed numerous people involved in the medical field, read a fantastic book (Mountains Beyond Mountains), and meet three mentors and two friends I’ll never forget. I am excited to say I’ll be going to UNC, and I plan on majoring in neuroscience with a Premed focus. Some advice I’d give to anyone that wants to apply for the ISHTaR is first do it, and second that you can truly make what you want out of this internship. There is always something new to learn and do, so the more you put in the more you will get out of it.
