The award was presented during the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Conference.

This prestigious honor is awarded by the Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) and celebrates an academic department that provides flexible scheduling, buy-down for global health activities, and encourages faculty to mentor global emergency medicine trainees.

“This is wonderful recognition for the Global Health Division of the Department of Emergency Medicine,” said Dr. Jane Brice, Chair and Professor for the UNC Department of Emergency Medicine.

“Dr. Justin Myers and his team are leading the world of global emergency medicine, teaching learners both abroad and here at UNC, and progressing the care of patients across the world. They are making a difference, and that’s what our Department is all about — making a difference in the lives of people. I am so proud.”

On behalf of the UNC Health Equity and Global Care Division:

“Our chair, Dr. Jane Brice, has been enthusiastically in support of our Division of Health Equity and Global Emergency Care since she began her role in 2015. Our department, via our chair, has supported the endeavors of our Global Health division through direct financial means, assistance with scheduling, hiring, education and mentoring of international learners.

Our department has consistently hosted international academic physicians for their research/sabbaticals. We have hosted EM residents from around the globe for short term observer-ships and international medical students for rotations in EM. Our department’s research division has assisted with the preparation and publication of multiple global health manuscripts. Dr. Brice consistently reiterates the value and necessity of support for global health.”
