Dr. Ashkin is committed to improving the wellbeing of marginalized and minoritized populations. His worked has focused on training medical students and family medicine residents in the care of underserved communities. More recently he has focused on the wellbeing of people, their families, and communities impacted by the criminal legal system and incarceration. He founded the North Carolina Formerly Incarcerated Transition Program (NC FIT Program) which connects people post-release to essential health services and comprehensive reentry assistance.
