Dr. Greg Smith was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics, effective August 12, 2021.
The laboratory of Dr. Jason Stein (Assistant Professor, Genetics and Neuroscience Center) published a paper titled “Brain-trait-associated variants impact cell-type specific gene regulation during neurogenesis” in the American Journal of Human Genetics (19 Aug 2021 issue).
The MMRRC at UNC, led by Dr. Terry Magnuson (Vice Chancellor for Research and Distinguished Professor of Genetics), was awarded a $500,000 supplement from the NIH to develop and validate two new animal model resources to support research activities related to pathogenic coronaviruses (including SARS-CoV2).
In addition to his role as the Director of Research for the Department of Genetics, Dr. Chris Gregory serves in the School of Medicine as the Director of the Office of Research Technologies (ORT).
Dr. Samir Kelada (Associate Professor, Department of Genetics) is the PI on a new R21 grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) titled “Gene-Environment Interactions with Ozone and Non-atopic Asthma”.

Fernando Pardo Manuel de Villena, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics, was recently interviewed by the Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program, Dr. Rick Woychik.
Drs. Jason Stein (Assistant Professor) and Hyejung Won (Assistant Professor) have been awarded an U01 grant from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) for their project titled “Discovery and validation of genetic variation impacting the gene regulatory landscape during human cortical development”.
