Personal Statement

I joined the Division in summer of 2024 after working across clinical and academic settings as an occupational therapist and course instructor. Within my role as an occupational therapist, I have primarily worked in behavioral/mental health settings, as well as with older adults in skilled nursing facilities. My clinical passion lies in serving adults as they navigate the changes that can occur regarding one’s mental health and substance use patterns across life. This has strongly informed my research, with my dissertation work exploring sexual minority women’s lived experiences regarding substance use. As an educator, I have had the pleasure of teaching as an instructor at both the graduate and undergraduate levels pertaining to occupational therapy and the group therapeutic process. I have also facilitated a graduate course exploring participatory action research and community based participatory research in public health. My teaching philosophy emphasizes the incorporation of students’ lived experiences and collaborative and individual strengths to engage in hands-on and discursive knowledge-building. I facilitate andragogical approaches to teaching and learning and encourage critical assessment of current bodies of knowledge and best practices within occupational science and therapy.
