Celebrating 50 Years of the Medical Education Development Program

FOUNDING

The Medical Education Development program was established in 1974 in response to disparities in healthcare access and outcomes among medically under-served communities, with the goal of increasing excellence in the healthcare workforce.

EARLY SUCCESS

In its early years the program began to attract promising students from medically under-served backgrounds, providing them with mentorship, academic support, and clinical experiences to prepare them for careers in medicine.

EVOLUTION

Over time, the program expanded its offerings and resources, including the addition of enrichment activities, research opportunities, and partnerships with community organizations and healthcare institutions.
