Dr. Varkey has engaged in formative and summative program evaluation work since 2015. She has experience assessing programs in a variety of areas, such as: faculty professional development efforts, recruitment and retention initiatives of historically excluded faculty, management development training for behavioral health care leaders with lived experience, children’s education fiscal mapping initiatives, multi-tenant nonprofit center capacity assessments, and student training and support programs. Within ODEI, Dr. Varkey helps structure, develop, analyze, and disseminate results for evaluations of over 40 programs and initiatives.

Dr. Varkey was trained in quantitative and qualitative research methods and uses both approaches (when appropriate) in conducting evaluations. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she double majored in political science and public policy with a concentration in social justice. She completed her Master of Public Administration at East Carolina University and her Ph.D. in Public Administration at NC State University.

Dr. Varkey is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine.
