The Faculty Director of Outreach Initiatives will be part of the Execution Team (ET) implementing the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Health, and Novant Health partnership to improve health in southeastern NC. This small ET currently includes five members who work to facilitate and guide the implementation of the affiliation agreement under the supervision of senior leaders from both institutions.

The affiliation agreement between the entities involves expansion of clinical care and academic work in the region including education and research based at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The counties most directly included are New Hanover, Columbus, Pender, Bladen, and Brunswick. Other regional partners include UNC-Wilmington, Cape Fear Community College, and other community agencies.

This partnership officially began in February of 2021 and early work has included solidifying the governance structure, establishing teams of thought leaders from these institutions and other collaborators in the region, and working through the logistics of establishing and executing annual budgets. The next phases of the affiliation will include performance management, evaluation, establishing new projects, managing transitions, and the potential for some refocusing of effort.

 

Major Responsibilities

The Faculty Director of Outreach Initiatives will serve as a member of the Execution Team (ET) in the Dean’s Office in the School of Medicine. The ET reports to the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs within the Dean’s Office, and within the partnership reports to the Affiliation Executive Team, comprised of two UNC and two Novant Health senior leaders.

The expected time for investment in the role is approximately 8-10 hours or one day per week, and 20% salary support will be provided to the home department.

The purpose of this role is to add depth and broaden the expertise of the Execution Team. Characteristics and helpful attributes of the role will include:

In the future, the role may be engaged in other Outreach work with Novant Health or toward other partnerships or priorities.

Qualifications:

  • MD, DO, PhD with leadership experience
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Excellent skills in working collaboratively
  • Has an interest in learning about all aspects of academic medicine
