Results from an international, multicenter phase 2 clinical trial led by Dr. Ataga were published online by the New England Journal of Medicine on December 3 and were presented December 4 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology in San Diego. The trial found that an investigational compound called SeIG1 dramatically reduces sickle cell pain crises.

An article published on the Higher Education Works Foundation highlights the kidney transplant story of UNC patient Kevin Howell and donor Lindsay Recchie. Howell, who is the Senior Vice President of External Affairs for the UNC system, is a patient of Dr. Falk. When he needed a kidney transplant, Lindsay Recchie, also a UNC system employee, stepped up to donate. She received the Governor’s Award for Excellence for the gift of her kidney to a co-worker.
