John Buse, MD, MPH, was interviewed by Endocrine Today describing what the future of insulin may look like.

The article recognizes novelty treatments to manage diabetes, including the smart insulin patch that “leverages chemistry to release insulin in parallel with fluctuations of glucose.” Buse says that if “successfully translated to human use, it could dramatically reduce the burden of insulin treatment,” an effort that will require tweaking the formulation to tune it to application in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and then demonstrating safety and effectiveness.  He also says he is optimistic that this effort will be successful, but it will take time.

Buse is the Verne S. Caviness Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chief of the division of endocrinology.
