Giselle Corbie-Smith, MD, a professor of medicine in the division of general medicine, and Alexa Mieses Malchuk, MD, assistant professor of family medicine, told ABC 11 News that “COVID-19 is putting a magnifying glass on health disparities.”

Corbie-Smith, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Social Medicine, recognizes minorities tend to have higher risk factors for poorer outcomes in this pandemic, such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

She also explained how excess morbidity and mortality in COVID-19 is “a reflection of centuries really of systems that have created this sort of perfect storm, where people have less opportunities to work in places where they’re able to shelter in place so minorities are more likely to be those ‘essential workers.'”
