Gerald Hladik, MD, Doc J. Thurston Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chief of the UNC Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, has announced the appointment of Jennifer “Jenny” E. Flythe, MD, MPH, to Vice Chief for the Division.
“Dr. Flythe brings a wealth of expertise in patient-centered outcomes research in individuals with advanced kidney disease, processes of care, and quality improvement,” Hladik said. “She has achieved both national and international standing as a leading dialysis researcher, serving on multiple editorial boards for leading nephrology journals and is a member of the Executive Committee for Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Kidney Health Initiative (a public private partnership with the Food and Drug Administration). As Vice Chief, Dr. Flythe will work collaboratively with our group to support the Division’s efforts to enhance clinical operations.”
Flythe is Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of UNC Hospital’s Acute Dialysis Unit. Her research aims to improve the safety and experiences of individuals living with kidney disease by bettering clinical and patient-reported outcomes. She uses a range of study designs and approaches including epidemiology, clinical trials, qualitative methods, and implementation research and has a long-standing history of diverse stakeholder engagement in her research. Flythe graduated Cum Laude from Duke University, attended medical school at the UNC School of Medicine and completed her residency at Oregon Health & Science University. After nephrology fellow training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, she attended the Harvard School of Public Health and served as a Brigham and Women’s faculty member. She joined UNC as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2014 and was appointed Associate Professor in 2019.
