What is your clinical expertise?

I believe my greatest strength, from a clinical standpoint, is in the thoughtful application of physiologic principles to patient care.

What is your current role in the Department of Medicine?

I currently have roles as the Training Program Director for Nephrology and the Acting Chief of the Division of Nephrology. I maintain a busy clinical practice, and I am greatly privileged to have the opportunity to serve others who have disorders of the kidney. I have enjoyed developing and implementing medical education initiatives and curricula for all levels of learners, starting with first year medical students. I have been course director for the medical student course in renal pathophysiology for the past 18 years. My current role as Education Director for Maintenance of Certification for the American Society of Nephrology enables me to be involved in the education of the most seasoned and brightest practicing nephrologists, a particularly challenging task. In addition to helping individuals with kidney disease, one of my greatest joys derives from mentoring students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. Borrowing from basketball, I like to fulfill the role of the point guard, helping to place others in a position to succeed with a “slam dunk.”

What current project or initiative at UNC are you involved in that you are excited about?

I’m excited to be involved with the UNC nephrology integrated care program. This will provide high value care for individuals who have end-stage renal disease. There is also a plan, led by Dr. Ronald Falk and Dr. Janet Rubin, to grow the presence of outstanding physician-scientists at UNC. This initiative will be essential for advancing the already outstanding research program in the Department of Medicine. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the recruitment of the best and brightest investigators to UNC.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I love to spend time with my wonderful wife, children, and extended family. Those times are truly the most precious.
