The International Neuropalliative Care Society (INPCS) recently honored Laura Hanson MD, MPH with its Outstanding Scientific Contribution Award. The November 2022 award honored Dr. Hanson’s research in dementia palliative care. At the INPCS’ invitation, she gave a presentation at the virtual meeting.

At this meeting participants also learned that UNC Neurocritical Care faculty member Winnie Lau, MD received an INPCS seed funding award. This funding will help expand UNC Palliative Care’s work. Specifically, it will facilitate hospice access for UNC patients with severe acute brain injury.

Dr. Lau’s research collaborators are Dr. Hanson, Dr. Margaret Drickamer (Geriatrics, UNC Hospice), Dr. Jared Lowe (General Internal Medicine, UNC Hospice), Dr. Casey Olm-Shipman (Neurocritical Care), and Dr. David Huang. In addition to being the new Division Chief for Neurocritical Care, Dr Huang is also an investigator in neuropalliative care research. About this research team Dr. Hanson says, “It’s exciting to have such expertise in this important area of research and clinical care.”
