Marcie Riches is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology.
What is your clinical expertise?
I focus in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with a focus on infection prevention in our transplant patients.
Tell us about your role in the Department of Medicine.
I have a focus in clinical research in autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation focusing on prevention and treatments of complications of the transplant procedure. I also serve as our Director of Clinical Research and Data Quality for BMT.
What current project or initiative at UNC are you involved in that you are excited about?
I am currently collaborating with my prior research IT colleagues at Moffitt Cancer Center to bring to UNC a BMT Database, BRAIN (BMT Research Analysis and Informatics Network), that we built during my time there. All transplants are required to be reported to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR). There are more than 3000 data fields captured on each patient. To streamline this approach and maximize data for our own institutional investigations, BRAIN can interface both with the EMR and report electronically to the CIBMTR. UNC is in negotiation to continue development of BRAIN as a partnership with Moffitt.
Where is an interesting place you’ve traveled?
While I have traveled many places, for me, the most unique was Riyadh Saudi Arabia. I have been there twice to give talks on infections in our HCT patients.
