In the organization’s annual rankings of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” U.S. News & World Report ranked UNC School of Medicine 1st in primary care–a distinction that includes general medicine and geriatrics in the department of medicine, as well as the department of family medicine.

Several UNC-Chapel Hill graduate and doctoral programs received high rankings as part of U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” but none higher than the UNC School of Medicine’s primary care ranking of Number One.
The School of Medicine’s (SOM) primary care — a distinction that includes general medicine and geriatrics in the department of medicine, as well as family medicine — was ranked second last year behind the University of Washington. This year, UC-San Francisco is ranked second, followed by Washington, UCLA, and Baylor.
Dr. Darren DeWalt is chief of the division of general medicine comprised of general internal medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, fellows, and staff, with an overall goal of improving the health status of North Carolina adults. General Medicine provides primary and consultative clinical care to both the inpatient and outpatient population at UNC Hospitals and affiliated practices. Research involves broad areas of clinical epidemiology, health services research, clinical decision-making research, and prevention. Students, residents and fellows are trained in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health and UNC Hospitals, at multiple levels, ranging from introductory clinical interviewing courses to research fellowship programs for board-certified internists.
Dr. Jan Busby-Whitehead is the chief of the division of geriatrics and the Center for Aging and Health. From providing patient care, to finding ways to bring evidence-based research and training to improving clinical care, faculty, clinicians, researchers, and educators, the geriatrics division works to improve the quality of life for North Carolina’s aging population. Its interdisciplinary, award-winning Geriatrics Specialty Clinic, Palliative Care Consult Services, and Geriatric Inpatient Hospital Service at the UNC Hillsborough Campus are dedicated to providing first-class care at the highest level.
The UNC School of Medicine also ranked 23rd in research and 14th for obstetrics and gynecology.
