What is consciousness and how does it come about? The answers to these questions are not clear.
Since the first brain surgery with the trephinations (making a hole in the skull) done in ancient times to the more recent developments of placing stimulating electrodes directly into the brain to treat disorders such as Parkinson’s disease; neurosurgery has proved an exciting and at times revolutionary field.
Presenters include Frank Polleux, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience at Columbia University; Arnold Kriegstein, MD, PhD, John Bowes Distinguished Professor in Stem Cell and Tissue Biology at University of California-San Francisco; and Elizabeth M. C. Hillman, PhD, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University.

This symposium will provide physicians, athletic trainers and therapists, and other allied health care professionals with a comprehensive overview of sport-related neurotraumatic injuries, with an emphasis on sports-related mild traumatic brain injuries, concussions, and cervical spine injuries.
