Paul Shea, MD, has been named curriculum representative for simulation, experiential learning and training for the UNC School of Medicine. He will start his position in August 2022.
A new study shows how broadly the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions for working parents who experienced difficulties finding childcare, especially parents of children who have special healthcare needs. Third-year UNC School of Medicine student Caleb Easterly led the analysis of data collected before and during the pandemic.

Founded in 2006, the Academy of Educators is designed to emphasize teaching and support faculty development both in Chapel Hill and across the state.
Meg Kihlstrom, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2022. Since becoming a faculty member in 2015, Dr. Kihlstrom has had a strong commitment to the Department of Pediatrics’ Education mission, In March of 2021, Dr. Kihlstrom was named as Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Program at UNC.
Elizabeth Fitzgerald, MD was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics effective May 1, 2022. Dr. Fitzgerald has been a faculty member in Pediatric Emergency Medicine since 2016. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Fitzgerald is focused on Global Health. She is the U.S.-based director of UNC pediatric resident activities in Malawi and has developed and implemented a biannual Pediatric Global Health SIM for UNC trainees planning to do electives in low-resource settings.
Deborah “Deb” Flowers, MSN, RN, CPNP, SANE-A, SANE-P, who co-founded the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program at UNC Hospitals in 1997, received the 2022 National Crime Victims’ Service Allied Professional Award, which is given by the Office for Crime Victims in the U.S. Department of Justice.
