Schilling New Assoc. Director of Pediatrics for NRSA Primary Care Research Fellowship

Congratulations to Dr. Sam Schilling!  Samantha Schilling, MD, MSHP, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, has joined the NRSA Primary Care Research Fellowship program to serve as Associate Director of Pediatrics. Dr. Schilling has great expertise on mechanisms of child abuse prevention and conducts primary care-based studies of parenting interventions on the impact of parental self-efficacy, effectiveness, and reducing severe discipline and abuse. For years Dr. Schilling has been an important participant in the recruitment piece of the fellowship, meeting with potential fellows and providing key feedback. Dr. Schilling will expand the core faculty expertise within the program and enhance the fellowship experience.

Orr Receives 2022-23 James Woods Junior Faculty Award

Congratulations to Dr. Colin Orr!  Dr.Orr has been selected to receive the 2022-23 James Woods Junior Faculty Award. The selection committee members were very impressed with his proposal to develop a novel peer support intervention to address food insecurity and consequently type 2 diabetes in children in the Hispanic population.

Seashore Named Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer

We are pleased to announce that, Dr. Carl Seashore has been named Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer for the UNC Medical Center.  Dr. Seashore is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine  with interests in quality improvement, newborn care, ambulatory pediatrics, and informatics.

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Rohan Patel, MD

Rohan Patel joined the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine as an Assistant Professor on September 1, 2022. In 2016, Dr. Patel earned a medical degree from the Saint George School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. Dr. Patel completed a Pediatric Residency at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia in 2019 and a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus Ohio in 2022. Welcome Rohan!

Kihlstrom and McNeal-Trice Receive Denny, Simon, Tingelstad Academic Service Award

Meg Kihlstrom, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Critical Care Medicine, and Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hospital Pediatrics, have been awarded the Denny, Simon, Tingelstad Academic Service Award from the North Carolina Pediatric Society in recognition of their work with the Pediatric Residency Program at UNC.

Jessica Young joined the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine as an Assistant Professor on August 29, 2022. Dr. Young earned a medical degree from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 2017. Dr. Young completed a Pediatric Residency at Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2020 and a Masters in Public Health at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2022. Welcome New Physician Faculty: Lucien Gonzalez, MD, MS, FAAP

Lucien Gonzalez joined the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine as an Associate Professor on August 22, 2022. Dr. Gonzalez earned a medical degree from the University of Massachusetts in 2001. Dr. Gonzalez completed a Pediatric Residency at New York Medical Center/Westchester Medical Center in 2008 and completed an Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 2009. Dr. Gonzalez also served for several years as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Welcome Lucien!

Welcome New Physician Faculty: Katherine MacDonald, MD, MPH

Katherine MacDonald joined the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine as an Assistant Professor on August 1, 2022. Dr. MacDonald earned her MD from Indiana University’s School of Medicine in 2011. She completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Utah in 2014 and served as an Adolescent Medicine Fellow at the Indiana University School of Medicine from 2016 to 2019. Dr. MacDonald earned her MPH, with a concentration in Epidemiology, from the Fairbanks School of Public Health at Indiana University in 2019. Welcome Katherine!
