Applicants applying to our program must be registered through the National Residency Match Program(NRMP) and are required to use the Electronic Residency Application Service(ERAS). The deadline for applications is November 1st.

Criteria for All Applicants:

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • USMLE Transcript
  • MSPE
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Passing USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 result at the time of application
  • Passing USMLE Step 2 CK/COMLEX Level 2 CE result at the time of Rank List submission
  • Due to the suspension of testing, submission of USMLE Step 2 CS/COMLEX Level 2 PE scores are waived
  • For International or Foreign Medical Graduates:

In addition to the above, applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Graduation from medical school no more than two prior to application year
  • Clinical experience (not observership) in the USA
  • If not a citizen of the USA, UNC Hospitals only supports the J-1 visa

Application Process

  1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS); we cannot review your application until all required materials are submitted
  2. Review of applications begins when ERAS goes live. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application through ERAS
  3. An interview request will be sent from our program once selected; all invitations to interview will be extended via ERAS

Visiting Medical Students

Fourth year medical students are welcome to contact the University of North Carolina School of Medicine to arrange a visiting student elective. Please contact Lynn West for additional questions at lynn_west@med.unc.edu.

Based on availability, students may choose any pediatric or medicine rotation. There are four rotations that cross both departments and that may be of particular interest to students applying to Med-Peds:

  • PEDS 412/MEDI 412 Endocrinology
  • PEDS 413/MEDI 413 Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Nephrology Elective
  • PEDS 430 Med-Peds Hospitalist Elective
