September 2, 2010 — I just wanted to thank ALL of the OR staff who worked so hard to make the two laser days, on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, so very successful.

We did thirty (30!!!) cases –adult and children, burn and non-burn, recon and cosmetic–in the annex.

Health Sciences Library Names Room for Dr. Wilcox

August 31, 2010 — The UNC Health Sciences Library plans to rename its Historical Collections Reading Room as “The Benson Reid Wilcox Historical Collections Reading Room” in recognition of Dr. Benson Wilcox.

Hultman Recieves AOA Professionalism Award

June 30, 2010 — The Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society has named C. Scott Hultman, MD, a recipient of the 2010 Edward D. Harris Professionalsim Award. Dr. Hultman, chief of UNC’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery division, will receive a $16,000 award to support his project, “Understanding and Achieving Professionalism in a Surgical Practice.” Read more.

Hadar and Meyers Elected to MSEC

June 7, 2010 — The faculty elected three Medical Staff Executive Committee at-large members last week. Each faculty member will serve a three-year term on the MSEC. The winners of the elections are: David Henke, MD, Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (re-elected); Eldad Hadar, MD, Department of Surgery, Division of Neurosurgery (re-elected); and Michael Meyers, MD, Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology. Gerber Promoted to Full Professor

June 1, 2010 — Dr. David Gerber, chief of the Division of Abdominal Surgery, has been promoted to Professor of Surgery effective June 1, 2010.

Sommer Awarded Medical Alumni Endowment Grant

May 27, 2010 — Dr. Courtney Sommer, currently a third year General Surgery Resident, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Medical Alumni Endowment Grant Fund through the UNC School of Medicine’s Medical Alumni Association. The aim of the Endowment Fund Grant is to fund proposals from new investigators or established investigators exploring new areas of discovery from UNC faculty or housestaff that will promote excellence in education, research or service and has a high likelihood of being sustained in the future.

Dehmer Elected President of Housestaff Council

May 20, 2010 — Dr. Jeff Dehmer, a PGY-3 in the general surgery residency program, has been elected President of the UNC Housestaff Council for the one-year term beginning July 1, 2010.
