The UNC Department of Urology is proud to announce that Dr. Ethan Basch, an Adjunct Faculty member, has been honored as one of the 2024 Giants of Cancer Care by OncLive. This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Basch’s pioneering work in the field of patient-reported outcomes, highlighting his dedication to improving the quality of life and care for cancer patients.

Dr. Basch has led national studies demonstrating the benefits of real-time symptom monitoring for cancer patients, using electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO). His research showed that patients utilizing ePRO lived longer, experienced improved quality of life, and had fewer emergency room visits and hospitalizations. This groundbreaking work has set a new standard in oncology care, emphasizing the critical role of patient feedback in treatment and care management.

Currently, Dr. Basch is spearheading a multi-institutional initiative to implement ePRO in oncology practices nationwide, supported by a $3 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. This project aims to standardize ePRO implementation, ensuring its broader adoption and continued impact on patient care.

Dr. Basch’s recognition as a Giant of Cancer Care is a testament to his  notable contributions to oncology and his commitment to enhancing patient outcomes. We are honored to have him as part of our faculty and celebrate his achievements alongside our distinguished colleagues.

In addition to Dr. Basch, two other members of the UNC community have previously been recognized as Giants of Cancer Care. Dr. Hyman B. Muss, awarded in 2017, is renowned for his work in geriatric oncology, focusing on improving cancer treatment for older patients. Dr. Charles M. Perou, honored in 2019, is celebrated for his groundbreaking research in cancer diagnostics, particularly his identification of the intrinsic subtypes of breast cancer, which has significantly advanced our understanding and treatment of the disease.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Basch for this well-deserved recognition and celebrate the continued excellence and innovation within the UNC oncology community.
