The UNC Department of Urology is thrilled to announce the selection of Dr. Angela Smith, MD, MS, as one of the fellows for the 2024-2025 Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program. Dr. Smith is the UNC School of Medicine’s Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department of Urology’s Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, and a Professor of Urology.

Offered as part of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM) program at Drexel University College of Medicine, the ELAM Program is designed to equip senior-level women leaders with the strategic acumen and personal effectiveness necessary to navigate the complexities of academic medicine.

Dr. Smith’s selection for this prestigious program underscores her exceptional leadership qualities and commitment to advancing healthcare. With a distinguished career marked by numerous accolades and accomplishments, Dr. Smith brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this new endeavor.

As the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development at the UNC School of Medicine, Dr. Smith has demonstrated her dedication to nurturing the next generation of medical professionals and fostering a culture of excellence within the academic community. Her leadership in this role, coupled with her extensive background in urology and academic medicine leadership, makes her an exceptional candidate for the ELAM program.

In addition to her role as Associate Dean, Dr. Smith is also an ICF ACC Credentialed Coach and continues to co-lead the UNC School of Medicine’s Coaching Academy, Leadership in Academic Medicine (LAMP) Program, Professional Development Discover Your Superpower Series, among other initiatives, further highlighting her commitment to lifting up her colleagues and guiding them through their own professional development and mentorship journeys.

Furthermore, Dr. Smith’s remarkable achievements have been honored with the UNC School of Medicine’s 2023 Early Career Achievement Award in recognition of her significant contributions to the field of medicine within the first 15 years of her career.
