UNC Urology proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Hung-Jui (Ray) Tan, Director of Urologic Oncology, Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program Director, Associate Professor of Urology, and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Member, as Chair-Elect for the American Urological Association’s (AUA) Data Committee, effective June 1, 2024. Dr. Tan’s selection as Chair-Elect marks a significant milestone, underscoring his leadership and contributions to urology and research.

As Chair of the AUA Data Committee, Dr. Tan will lead strategic efforts to advance the AUA’s data agenda and research initiatives within the field of urology. His responsibilities include overseeing the collection and analysis of urologic data from diverse sources to inform evidence-based practices and improve patient outcomes. Dr. Tan will collaborate closely with AUA leadership, committee members, data services, and external stakeholders to prioritize research topics, develop innovative data projects, and promote workforce and care delivery research. His leadership will also focus on expanding the utilization of the AQUA Registry and enhancing data accessibility for AUA members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in urologic care.

More About Dr. Tan

Dr. Tan has dedicated his professional career to clinical excellence and advancing urologic research. In March 2024, he was honored as one of the American Urological Association’s 2024 Young Urologists of the Year Award Winners, representing the Southeastern Section of the AUA. He has secured over $4 million in research grants since 2018, including a recent $1.5M Department of Defense “Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) Patient Well-Being and Survivorship Award – Pilot Clinical Trial” grant.

Among his other notable achievements, Dr. Tan played a pivotal role in launching the AUA Data Research Program. This initiative aims to harness the vast potential of the AUA Data Repository for innovative research and evidence-based practices in urology. His collaborative efforts with Dr. Matthew Nielsen, Chair of the AUA Science and Quality Council, highlight UNC Urology’s commitment to advancing research initiatives with transformative impacts.

Committee Structure

During his tenure, Dr. Tan will collaborate with AUA staff and committee members to enhance the effectiveness and value of urologic procedures and practices. The AUA, supported by over 500 volunteers across various committees, categorizes its committees by functional areas such as the Science & Quality Council.
