Welcome
Thanks for coming to our lab web page. The Strahl lab is located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and in the School of Medicine.
Our lab focuses on the role of histone post-translational modifications. Histones - which are central to the packaging of our genome - are decorated with a diverse number of chemical modifications; yet how they contribute (singly or in combination) to DNA-templeted events such as gene transcription or heterochromatin formation are poorly understood. To understand how histone modifications function (as well as how the enzymes that install, remove or "read" these modifications operate), we are taking advantage of multiple model systems including mammailan cells and the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Our long-term goal is to understand how the distinct types of modifications known to occur on histones contribute to a possible ‘histone code’ (Strahl & Allis Nature 2000) and to human biology and disease.
Please take a look around!
Diversity and Mentoring Statement: The Strahl lab is committed to a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all. We welcome individuals from all groups and backgrounds. We are fully devoted to everyone’s success. Achieving important and productive science requires a team in which everyone participates, and everyone helps each another. We affirm that a respectful, accommodating, and hospitable environment promotes the highest quality science and training for success.
